3 Signs That Your Home Has Termites

Spring is almost here, and it’s time to get your homes ready for warmer weather! Open the windows, start the spring cleaning…and check for termites.
Yes, checking for termites should be at the top of your home repair list for spring. Why? Spring’s warm, wet weather is a great time for termite activity including termite swarms. But, if you’ve seen a termite swarm, you’ve waited too long.
Termites cause more than $5 billion in property damage nationally each year. And because they can eat 24 hours a day, they can do thousands of dollars in damage to a home’s structure without homeowners even knowing it.
So how can you tell if you have a termite problem? Look for certain things around your home.
- Mud Tubes: Mud tubes are often the first external sign of a termite infestation. Termites create these tubes as a way to enter the home without being exposed to the exterior elements. Inspect your foundation closely for signs of these tubes.
- Wood Damage: If you notice damage to wooden structures within your home, termites may be to blame. Termites can feed 24 hours a day doing costly damage to your home’s structure.
- Termite Swarms: Often the last sign of a termite infestation, termite swarms can emerge during warmer months. Swarmers are reproductive termites that are looking for a place to reproduce and begin a new colony. Not sure if you’re seeing termite swarms or flying ants? Termites are a silent invader. Even if you haven’t seen any of these signs, your home can still be susceptible to termite infestation.
We recommend having your home inspected annually by a NCPMA member company to protect it from termite infestation.
